Light cassettes and rear end components.

Hey guys,
I just bought a Marin Pine Mountain (Chromoly frame) which I am loving. But, I found overall the bike is very light except for the rear end.
So I am wondering if this is because of the cassette. Do cassettes vary in weight between different brands? If so, I'd like to know which is the lightest. What other components on the rear end of a bike have big weight penalties?
Thanks for the help,
Taylor.

Cassettes can vary. A cheap steel cassette will be up to 200 grams heavier than a more expensive aluminium one. XT cassettes are hard value to beat for their weight (can be had for $60-70 and weight around 260 grams)

However a lot of the weight could be in your rear wheel. Are the tyres and tubes light? They are the quickest and easiest way to cut weight. For a list of weights on bike parts then you can go here.

Whilst not a fully complete list, it is still a very good resource if you want to save a gram or two.
