Shuttle Vehicles 4WD vs 2WD

Contemplating buying a vehicle suitable for shuttling local & SW tracks.

Mostly Dwellingup to start with but would like to be able to do them all.

Interested in some input from experienced shuttlers who have used these roads regualarly the past few winters.

Was hoping to get away with just a 2WD van or ute.

Obviously a 4WD ute would be ideal but I'm on a bit of a budget.

Am I dreaming?

I've shuttled (yes even I've ridden dh) at Tom's with 6 of us and our bikes in the back of a Hiace van. We had no problems but that was in dry weather. It may be a bit harder in the wet. The roads down there are pretty good at the moment though.

Shuttling

90% of every where that is shuttable can be done in a van or 2wd, depends on how much you love your wheels at the end of the day.

I use a 4wd, gives you the advantage in winter on the steeper slippery climb's, even when it's dry if i have the trailer i'll put in low range on the way up, crawls up nice and easy with the extra wieght...

Cheers Housey.

These days you had better get a dual cab ute as sometimes the rangers will inforce the law and everyone needs accsess to a seatbelt. I use to have a single cab navara 2wd nice big tray we had 9 bikes and people hangen off that thing going up greenmount hill doing runs down the goat of the lookout at the top. Mad days but it was legal to ride in the back of a ute then, not anymore.

Have seen this inforced at dwelly.

Ford Courier 4WD Dual Cab is the go!

I got one of these just for shuttles...but it's now the daily driver. Going with a 4WD gives you the advantage of shuttling some tracks that a 2wd always won't go...such as the short way up Nannup, Mundaring since its been getting pretty rough and waethered and the GF...although you're not allowed to shuttle there nemore... :(

Dual Cab gets more people shuttling like Nige said.

But it's personal choice....

Hey John...Why not make a comeback to the DH world? The crowds are calling your name!!! :)

I want to give the rest of you a chance.......

No I need a bike and then I will be in for it. I may give one or two of the easier tracks a go next year if I get a bike in time.

4wd all the way

it can be done in a 2wd if you actually know how to drive... The advantage of a fourby is that you know you can get up there and it actually doesn't damage the tracks as much as gunning a 2wd does, the initial hill climb at mundaring is getting worse from 2wds seeing it and crapping themselves and hitting the accelerator, this damages the track more and damages the car more especially because it makes the car jump about more and this can make you hit the "private parts" of the car ie: having a very noisey ride home coz ya knocked of your muffler... we always see 2wd cars up at mundaring just sitting there for hours on end, like beemers and stuff and i dont want to know what they are doing :/

holden rodeos the go. well thats what i use, plus its always easier usin a ute with a deep tray so u can just hang the bikes off the back.

This seems to be becoming a

This seems to be becoming a car sales dream thread. Most tracks are accessed by 2wd bus with bulk bike trailers. Any thing else is usually a walk. Fire trails have to accommodate fire brigade meaning some 13tonne vehicles move trough the tracks in case of fire. 2wd will get you DH ing but for Freeride... well personally...anything that climbs well over anything will do with a tray so you don't get no hookups by lagging trailer parts. ;)
