Hey there guys.
Ive just broken my collarbone and its a severe break with 5cm overlap and 1 bone almost poking thru the skin, Im just enquiring as to weather anyone else may have had corrective surgery and if so which path they took. plate n screws or pins.
Just wondering how the recovery has gone including movement etc. and details on the surgery
Hopefully ill be back out there soon enjoying my new found hobby.

Swim, Swim, Swim
Mate, i busted my collar bone a few years back but didn't need to have surgery. According to the doc's the only time they do is when any movement will be impared or it's really out of whack.
What i can strongly recommend is that as SOON as you are able (speak to your doc, but basically as soon as the knitting of the bones is strong enough), jump in a pool and start getting strong. My understanding is that bones heal stronger when the mending break is actually being being put under a little resistance.
Speak to so many people that have had broken collar bones and not done any training while they are mending and they have had all sorts of problems with strength and flexibility.
Cheers
swim
I agree with Sharpie in terms of swimming. I didn't break my collarbone rather I had a sterniclaviclar disclocation & continuing swimming regularly has helped.
Whatever you do, don't stop training. If you swim, ensure to start slowly (ok, i know this is common sense but hey you never know how eager someone is!) and yes it will feel rather strange. Just keep at it!
Hope you heal quickly!
cheers for that guys, ive
cheers for that guys, ive just fount out that its so mis aligned im getting a plate put in this weekend. hopefully all goes well.
and ill be straight into that pool and hopefully back onto a bike soon.
Me too
I've just had surgery on my broken collar bone - done at the 6 hr. Mine was in three pieces, so they put a plate in (30/6). It's a bit painful, but I figure in the long run I'll be better off. Good luck. Hope it goes well.

good luck with the op mate,
good luck with the op mate, hope you guys get on your bikes real soon.
I hurt my shoulder training for the 6 hour and havnt ridden since then, nothing broken luckly but it was a real close one.
I guess its nothing compaired to what you guys are going through!!

Wont take long
FYI i broke my collar bone and couple of ribs(skin etc) , at goat farm at end of january , i was riding again very gingerly inside a month (no plates)
what has taken the longest is the damaged i did to the shoulder ligaments, but now i have full deflection again and it does creack and crack a bit more ,but i reckon the plate will speed recovery (pro roadies have plates and ride in a week) ,dont force it , small daily incremental improvements soon be A1
and im wrong side of 50

Good luck with your op.... I
Good luck with your op.... I had a similar injury many years ago from football and can tell you not having corrective surgery caused me many many years of pain and discomfort, and loss of mobility due to muscle shortening and rotator cuff issues.
Def best option getting operation. Also, boxing is great sport for shoulder strength and rehab... particularly Thai (Muay Thai)
lousy collarbones
Mate, I smashed my left collarbone to pieces on a craptastic crash while doing a few DH runs. The docs said that there were not enough whole pieces of bones left to try and plate up, so it was left to heal by it self. All the bits and pieces just joined together to form a ball of bones. Its been about 6 months now and its back to 100% strength. A bit sore while sleeping on it, but in terms of riding.. all good. Just give it time and take it easy and you'll be right.
well im back home from the
well im back home from the hospital. got the lc dcp plate installed, nice little 4" cut with some sore stitches.
bit of swelling and some numbness around the plate and a bit below but they said that should all return to normal with at worst a tiny patch like a 20c coin remaining numb.
But so far (within 5 hours of surgery) i already feel 100 times better than the week leading up to it.
Bone is straight, can now raise my shoulder as everythings now connected where it should be. but docs saying to remain in sling for 6 weeks!!
2 weeks dont even try lifting arm etc then chekup and he rekons sling for another 4ish weeks to make sure bone is fully fused, ligaments and nerves all settled and then start the physio process.
See how it all goes i guess but im pretty sure after the 2 weeks ill be loosening up the joints or ill be seized up by the end of the long wait.
keep yas posted
