What pisses me off is that WA has the fastest downhiller on the planet, and the media puts a small paragraph hidden away and out of sight.
Surely Sam Hill deserves better media coverage than what he is getting in his own state.
There must be someone high up in the media rides enough that can give us better coverage on national and international events.
Even though he came third I still consider him the best of this generation of downhillers.

I have also noticed that
I have also noticed that Mountain biking as a sport is almost unheard of on the back pages of papers and never heard/seen on the TV news.
__________________________It seems to me that only the big corporate events like footy and sports that make the country heaps of $$$ have priority over the lesser known sports. Does the institute of sport even recognise DH as part of the mountain bike world?
What a shame money is the only driving force for interest on the media pages in australia. The sponsors should be able to aford at least one page a year.
don't knock on deaths door, ring the bell and run, its more fun.
Don't Knock on deaths door. Ring the doorbell and run, It's more fun.
Sam
each year has been the same, poor bloke barely rate's a mention, i think it was last year with him winning the worlds and the cup series he basically acheived more than any other sportsperson in this state and did we see anything of what he did. Jack $#@*.
Now if he was riding a roadie you would be bored of his name already with what he has achieved.

Right on the money! It is
Right on the money! It is such an uphill battle for mountainbiking to get any sort of coverage in the mass media let alone DH. I doubt that our national bodies have any sort of marketing departments to match those of the AFL, cricket, motorsport etc, so maybe a different approach should be taken. I mean Taj Burrow is an aging, fat cokehead and if he even so much as farts at a contest the local media are frothing. But one of the main reasons we end up with the spiky end of the pineapple is because most of the chumps out there that pay attention to the mainstream media are happy to be spoonfed the same rubbish day in day out. Just like the Herd say,...Everything must change
...and they just might
I think you'll find that Sam was nominated for WA sportsman of the year by The West last year, which isn't too bad considering the coverage the sport gets. Hopefully with the World Cup round and then World Championship at Stromlo there will be more mainstream coverage. Also, with BMX at the Olympics, maybe if that proves popular some mtb interest will creep in too, who knows? At the end of the day, with services such as freecaster.tv and other online sources, do we really need the shitty West or some bimbo newsreader telling us what we already know in an uninspiring manner? If anything I'd like to see SBS take a more active interest, the cycling show they had a little while back almost cut it.
Sam
Sam gets nominated every year for WA sportsperson of the year, I thought a World Championship would easily out a do a coupla hundred runs.Every year he is in the cyclist of the year awards, once again a roadie getting second or 3rd at few races is better than a World Championship We do need the west or some bimbo telling not us(because we find out in manner of seconds after the result) but the general public about this guy and what he's doing in the sport, because that's what makes sport grow. As for the cycling show rename it the road show because thats what most of it is about last time i watch it, SBS oh they'll run a worlds episode in about 2 months after the event.

crap media
Sam Hill is a local boy, it's embarassing that the local channels aren't interested in a 4 time world champion. I'm sure more west Aussies would take more interest if they knew about it. More coverage would encourage the more sponsors into the sport. We all like watching sport at world class level.

ahhhhh i could write a whole
ahhhhh i could write a whole essay on this subject!
Having worked in & on TV shows, as a magazine editor, in the media & as an event promoter the subject interests me a lot. Jared Graves wrote an interestin piece a while ago basically posing the question, why doesnt mtb get the recognition & why have other sports that havn't been around as long as mtb have a much higher profile? cause really that's what you are talkin about, thats the core of it it aint just about sam............
sam hill
Well I am making this post about Sam.
Because Sam Hill is a local mtber.
Hes also the fastest downhiller on the planet.
Younger kids see him as a hero, someone to look up to.
And all he gets is a piss ant little paragraph hidden three or four pages from the back of the local rag.
Yeah right.
Rant rant.
crap media
Cadel Evens "front page" Roadie!!
Well he does come from a fat tyre background.
So.......................????
Who cares wether Sam Hill gets a mention or not? I'm pretty sure he's not in it for the fame and fortune. I guess he just likes riding his bike and is very good at it. Personally I prefer the fact that our sport is slightly "underground" it means that I can ride Jarrahdale, Kallamunda etc without seeing another person sometimes. Imagine if with more bods on the trails it would be like the roadies down Cottesloe on a Sunday morning!!!!!!!!!!
Good on Sam for doing what he does so well.
I'm a Pom and it's the same there. Not a mention of Steve Peat in the media. But it don't stop him.
OK so more coverage means sponsors and bigger events etc. But I think it will distract from the essence of what mountain biking is about............ Getting away from it all.
I suppose having people
I suppose having people chasing you around for a photo/talkshow allday isn't all that appealing, especially if you would rather get away from all that stuff. Still it would be nice to follow his trail without having to use the PC or subscribe to a MTB mag that only comes out every 3 months.

who cares?
Well I do. Thats why I put my opinion on this post.
I have an interest in sport at world class level especially when it concerns a West Aussie.
Stating my personal opinion may not make a difference, but then again it might.
Bring it on.
your right
Nah your right
